The tool can be divided into five types according to the surface of the workpiece. Processing a variety of outer surface of cutting tool, which comprises a lathe, planer, milling cutter, the outer surface of the broach and file and so on; hole processing tools, including bit, reaming drill, cutter, reamer and the inner surface broaches; thread cutting tools, including tap, die, the automatic opening and closing thread cutting head, thread turning tool and thread milling cutters; gear cutting tools, including hob, pinion cutter, shaving cutter, bevel gear processing tool, cutting tool, including inserted tooth saw blade, band saw, hacksaw, cutting tool and the saw blade milling cutter and so on. In addition, there is a combination of cutting tools.

According to the cutting motion mode and the corresponding cutting edge shape, the cutter can be divided into three types. Universal cutter, such as lathe, planer, milling cutter (not including the forming tool and forming tool and forming milling cutter), boring cutter, drill, reamer, reamer and saw; forming cutter, this type of tool blade with be workpiece processing section of the same or nearly the same shape, such as the forming tool, planer tool forming, forming milling cutter, broach, taper reamers and various thread processing tool; generating tool is generating method for machining of gear tooth surface or similar workpieces, such as hob, pinion cutter, shaving cutter, bevel gear planer and bevel gear milling cutter and other.

The clamping part of the cutting tool has two kinds, which are with hole and handle. The handle of the tool is usually rectangular, cylindrical and taper shank three. Lathe, planer tool, etc. generally rectangular handle; taper shank by taper bearing axial thrust, and with the help of the friction torque; cylindrical shank generally applicable to smaller twist drill, a vertical milling cutter, cutting by means of clamping frictional force transfer torque.
