Powder metallurgy bearings are forming from metal powders and other
anti-friction material powder pressing, sintering, shaping and immersion oil.
They have porous structure, among the
pores filled with oil after invasion hot oil. Rotation of pump suction and
friction heat result in thermal expansion of metal and oil while working, and
oil out of the pores then lubricate the friction surface. Oil sucked back into
the pores after bearing cooling.
Powder metallurgy bearings don’t need lubrication for a long time.
The higher porosity for PM bearing, the more oil. But the more the pores, the
lower its strength. These bearings are often in mixed lubrication state, and
sometimes can form a film lubrication, commonly be used in absence of
supplemental lubricants, light load and low speed situation. Depending on
operating conditions choose different oil rates of powder metallurgy bearing.
Large oil content can be applied in the absence of supplemental lubricants
and low load; low oil content can be applied for heavy load and high speed. With
graphite powder metallurgy bearings can improve safety because of graphite
itself lubrication. But its drawback is low intensity. In the case of
non-corrosive, it can consider choosing inexpensive, high strength iron-based
powder metallurgy bearings, but the hardness of the mating journal should be
raised.
